Walter Lee Younger is a major character in Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in The Sun. People learn from his actions and try to prevent themselves from making the same mistake. He kept on trying his hardest to get a portion of the insurance money mama received, and tried to invest it on a liquor store. Walter’s lack of an education and common sense causes him to make a serious mistake, which not only affects him, but his family as well. However, Walter was still portrayed as a round character, because through his actions he was able to become a character that grows up in maturity. Walter showed how he’s matured when he starts as a man who doesn’t know how to handle money, acts like a child when things don't go his way, but soon understands that you should never stoop down to the people who discriminate against you. …show more content…
For example, after he gives Travis an extra fifty cents, Walter asks Ruth, “ I need some money for carfare” (31 & 39). As shown here, Walter demonstrated how little he takes money seriously, and acts like they have an endless amount. His lack of understanding of how money should be treated will negatively affect him in the long run. In addition, as said in the film, after Ruth finds out what Walter had done, she tells mama, “The insurance money, Walter gave it away”. This illustrates how Walter can be too trusting with strangers about money, and how he does not take into account the risk he might be taking.
