The reason the twenty-three-year-old Juan was feeling particularly proud today was that he had been entrusted to serve as a courier for his organization Los coyotes fumadores.Juan had not always wanted to be in a gang, but when you grow up poor, being raised by a single alcoholic mother it was not easy to stay out of a life of crime. He still had thirty minutes until his meeting so slowed down slightly to avoid arriving early. The money in his messenger bag was not being delivered to the organization south of the border to buy drugs, but rather to pay for drugs that Los coyotes fumadores had already sold on consignment on behalf of their neighbor to the south. The reason this delivery was so important was that with this payment Los coyotes fumadores would be in the clear in regards to the cartel that smuggled drugs across the border for them and would be able to negotiate much bigger deliveries. This would enable Los coyotes fumadores to take the next step up the ladder and start supplying other street gangs with drugs in large volumes instead of having their own dealers selling on the streets. However if something happened and their supplier did not recieve their final payment Los coyotes fumadores would be in big trouble. Manuel had stressed the importance of everything going to plan with this delivery, if something went wrong not only would their gang lose their connection to the much larger gang south of the border, reprisal against Los coyotes fumadores would also in all probability be severe. Juan naturally felt extremely proud to be entrusted with something of this
