Los Vendidos by Luis Valdez Two Schools of literary criticism that can be used to analyze Los Vendidos by Luis Valdez, is Sociohistorical criticism and Biographical criticism. While doing research on Luis Valdez and Los Vendidos, I found that Mexican American experiences in the United States in 1967 influenced the play and that is where I found sociohistorical criticism can be applied to analyze. Sociohistorical criticism is the criticism where the theme is focused largely on issues related to social movements. For example, social movements like The United Farmer Strike and The Chicano Movement, also involves beliefs of when the piece of literature was written (Clarke A-42). Another criticism that can be used in Valdez’s play, is biographical criticism. Biographical criticism, is the criticism that “…pays particular attention to the ways in which an author’s life might have influenced his or her creations” (Clarke A-45). Another analysis, I discovered in my research is one of Luis Valdez’s interests was in theater, which is the reason Los Vendidos is written as a play. Another great way to analyze this play is by using sociohistorical criticism. Los Vendidos was written in the year 1967, around that time is when the Chicano civil rights movement and the United farm workers strike was forming, which Luis Valdez was a big part of these social events, for the fact that he was working alongside of a Chicano idol, Cesar Chavez.
