Young Goodman Brown is a symbolic tale of a young man who, for whatever reason, decides to leave his Faith, home, and community to enter the forest of temptation and sin. The further he travels into the forest, the harder it becomes to turn around and return to his Faith. When he leaves his village he also leaves behind his inhibitions and consciousness of what others think of him and therefore, allows him to “see” the things his naiveté, upbringings, and faith blinded him from before. It was Faith that tried to keep him from the evil he would see but once that is stripped away from him he can see the realities of life and, ultimately, Brown loses his faith in humanity.
