In the beginning of the book, all the boys were innocent little boys. That all changes throughout the story. Lord of the flies by William Golding is a Novel that was published after WWII, in 1954. The book is about a group of boys who were from a all boys boarding school. They all were on a plane, and the plane was shot down. They all ended up on an island, and they all had to learn how to adapt on the island and learn how to survive. All the boys in the book symbolizes the theme loss of innocence in the book Lord of the Flies.

Simon in the story symbolizes the good on the island, and slowly loses some of his innocence throughout the book. “Simon saw the picture of a human at once heroic and sick” (103). This symbolizes Simon losing his innocence after they killed the pig, cause he realizes they are savages and that they all were the beast. Another example of Simon connecting to the theme loss of innocence, is when he comes face to face with the beast, who he realized was a dead pilot. “Simon knelt on all fours and was sick till his stomach was empty” (146). Simon saw the beast which was a dead body, and felt sick from the sight. If anybody saw a dead body, they would loose their innocence. To be that young and to see a dead body, must of affected Simon and his innocence. In When Good People Do Bad Things, the author explains that when people are in groups, they lose touch of their moral and beliefs, and how other people feel about a situation. Anne Trafton says that when people are in group, everyone just follows the leader like in Lord of the Flies when everyone follows Jack at the end. “Groups also promote anonymity, diminish personal responsibility, and encourage reframing actions as ‘necessary for the greater good’” (Pg 1, 6th Paragraph). This quote would explain how Jack and his group agreed that sacrificing the pig's head was for the good, which Simon thought was wrong.
The boys in the Lord of the Flies all symbolizes the theme Loss of Innocence. Simon and Ralph are big symbols of that theme, because they realize that what is going on in that island is not good. The events that happen on the island makes them realize how bad people can be, which is a big loss of innocence at a young age.
