Every human goes through loss, it’s a universal experience that can make people very different. Loss during war is usually the worst kind of loss that you could think of. The classic world war 1 novel, Johnny Got His Gun, by Dalton Trumbo, follows a young soldier named joe, who has gone through very extreme physical and emotional loss. The consequences of his loss that he has been through is absolutely devastating. Similarly in the 1965 civil war movie, Shenandoah goes with the Anderson family as their land is intruded on due to the civil war. Like Joe they suffer awful losses due to the war. In the Anderson family, Charlie[the dad] goes through a couple of devastating losses throughout the movie. Although Charlie Anderson is similar to Joe because they both suffer losses because the war, but the consequences of those losses show us that some losses are a lot worse than others. Throughout the movie Charlie comes across many concrete losses. One of the first losses that was shown was the loss of Charlie’s wife Martha. They always leave a spot open for her at the dinner table so they feel that she is with them, which shows that Charlie and the rest of the family never forget about lost love ones. The second loss that Charlie came across was when his son Boy, got captured by the union. When Charlie found out that Boy was captured, he and his family (besides Ann and the baby) went out looking for him, and they were searching day and night for Boy. eventually the family did not come across Boy but they did come across Jennie's fiance, Sam. Since Sam is in the army he told Charlie and his family that they most likely are not going to find Boy. When the family got back, they found Ann dead, along with James. They were stabbed to death by thieves who were looking for horses. Luckily, baby Martha was still alive and
