Throughout Unbroken, the audience is taken through many different settings. The main character, Louie Zamperini, was born in Torrance, California in 1917. One of the first events that the audience reads about is a plane flying over the Zamperini house, the Graf Zeppelin. It is the largest plane ever created and it flew all across the world. When Louie was young, the United States was peaceful. Louie was a trouble-maker when he was little until his brother gave him a push in the right direction and made him join the track team. Unbroken is a remarkable survival story; it talks about Zamperini’s life and how the different settings he encounters alter his life. Louie progressively improved his running skills and was eventually chosen to compete in the Olympics in Berlin, Germany. At the time, Adolf Hitler was leader of Germany, therefore the audience could tell the time the story took place was not the best and he will eventually encounter some trouble. They are imprisoned in a small box and are starved and embarrassed by the soldiers. They are later transferred to prison camps where they endure harsh beatings and have to do grueling work for the Japanese. Louie, Phil, and the other soldiers go through a number of prison camps. Louie and the other soldiers change as people in their time imprisoned; they begin to lose their dignity and hope. After the war, the U.S. Soldiers are released and go home, but they are forever traumatized. Louie faced severe PTSD and alcoholism, putting his wife and child in danger. Louie’s wife tells him to attend a preaching session, hosted by Billy Graham. After a couple sessions, he finds faith and is able to quit drinking. Louie goes on to become a motivational speaker. The settings Louie encountered throughout his life changed him forever and because of this he lived to tell one of the greatest survival stories there
