Louis Jolliet, a Catholic French Canadian explorer made important discoveries in modern day Mississippi, while also being a cartographer, king’s hydrographer, fur trader, seigneur, organist, and teacher. Jolliet had many discoveries most notably along the Mississippi river. Even though he is primarily known for exploring the Mississippi River he also made important finds in the Hudson Bay area. After already going on two explorations Jolliet did not stop and became the first to give a descriptive report of the Labrador coast. Louis Jolliet’s many important discoveries allowed him to make a name for himself.
Louis Jolliet was born in Quebec City 1645 sometime before September twenty-first which is when he was baptized. Growing up Jolliet was surrounded by merchants while being the son of a wagon maker. Another event that had an impact on Louis Jolliet was the loss of his journal and its copies along with several of his companions put doubt on his and Marquette’s leadership skills. Raids by the English financially damaged Jolliet but that led to a merchants support and eventually to his Labrador Coast journey, even though this was bad for Jolliet’s business it led a chain of events that gave Jolliet another opportunity. Jolliet formed a fur trade company on the North Shore and because of this he was a later given a grant to become a merchant and the Island of Anticosti was put under his possessions. In 1697, due to his reputation and experience he was appointed professor of hydrography at the College of Quebec on April 13th.
