“I'd made it this far and refused to give up because all my life I had always finished the race.” (Zamperini). This quote by Zamperini is a very good sentence that sums up his life. Unbroken is about Louis Zamperini who was an American soldier during World War II. There are many different meanings or themes that one could pull from this book. Unbroken isn’t only a book about a heroic man who endured a lot of pain and show great amounts of strength and resilience, it is also a book about how God uses hardships to bring us closer to Him.
In order to fully understand the meaning what this is saying, you need to understand what Zamperini had to go through. His transformation starts at a young age, he was born to a middle class Italian family, and became somewhat of a bad kid. He got into drugs and alcohol from a young age and wasn’t able to break those habits until his brother, Pete, had him turn this energy from these bad things into running. Zamperini went on to be a phenomenal and successful runner, he started to break many high school records and then went on to compete at the 1936 in Berlin and finished 8th. But then the United States got wrapped up in World War II and Zamperini decided to enlist in the air force. Which is somewhat ironic because he had a big fear of planes

One man saying; “The title is all wrong, after the war, Louis returned home a broken man.” (Hansen) Zamperini struggled with alcohol and abuse. His wife filed for divorce, which she did later repeal. Zamperini didn’t want to divorce, so his wife made him attend seminars led by Billy Graham. This is when Zamperini made the turn around and devoted his life to God. God used this alcohol and abuse to get Zamperini closer to Him, in that if he hadn’t had that problem he would have never attended this seminar and never would have been converted to Christianity.
