Within the chapter in Studies in Short Fiction, called “Love Objects: Love and Obsession in the Stories of Edna O’Brien” by Kiera O’Hara, it pinpoints the problem with Edna O’Brien’s lead female characters clearly in the beginning — women are caught in a cycle of obsession, which hinders their capability of love. However, the chapter also tackles an awareness and understanding the women obtain in the obsession they acquire. The author uses a biography on O’Brien, a clear definition of the difference between love and obsession, along with her short stories as references to strengthen this argument of obsession gone wrong. When O’Hara brings in passages from various O’Brien short stories, she brings light to what is occurring in the story at the time, instead of plainly dropping in the quote or passage to plainly support her argument. …show more content…
Elaborating on this idea of these women who believe they are in love, however, it is actually obsession in a hidden, lust filled form, is a difficult task. However, the abundance of sources O’Hara uses to strengthen this argument of obsession inspires me to attempt to fill in the gaps of a males perspective. Perhaps by finding articles or short stories written by men during this time in Ireland would fill the voids in O’Hara’s argument. Other than the small gaps, I would like to emulate her connections and sources in my own
