Throughout the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, there were many different types of love displayed like romantic love, parental love, and forced love. Romantic love can be seen throughout the play with Hermia and Lysander. Another type of love that took place in this play was parental love when Egeus tries to force his daughter marry Demetries or she will be killed. The last type of love that was shown throughout was friendship love as shown between Hermia and Helena. Hermia and Lysander have the typical kind of love that most people wish to have which is romantic love. This could also be expressed as true love. When Lysander says “Love takes the meaning in love’s conference. I mean that my heart unto yours is knit, so that but one heart we can make of it…” (Shakespeare) he is showing how much he loves Hermia. Both, Hermia and Lysander had to overcome …show more content…
In the beginning of this play forced love was between Theseus and Hippolyta. Thesues mentions “I wooed thee with my sword and won thy love doing thee injuries…” (Shakespeare). This statement shows that he won her with his sword in the battle to win her love. By having Thesues win her love he has total power over her life and has to obey him and never deny what he is asking of her. In conclusion, A Midsummer Night’s Dream portrayed several different types of love including romantic, parental, and forced love. Throughout the play one of the couples that showed romantic love was Hermia and Lysander. Egeus demonstrated parental love by trying to have his daughter, Hermia, marry Demetrius. Forced love was displayed throughout the play by Theseus and Hippolyta’s because he won her love in battle. “Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, and therefore is winged Cupid painted blind”
