Low Socioeconomic Status In Education

The United States is the home to various cultures. Within the United States a culture that is evident in the eyes of society is a person’s social class or socioeconomic status (SES). Socioeconomic status is defined as “relative standing in the society based on income, power, background, and prestige” (Woolfolk, 2013, p.211). According to the United Census Bureau of 2014, an estimate of 46.7 million people live in poverty, with 21.1 percent of them being children under the age of 18 ( U.S. Census Bureau, 2015). These numbers are petrifying, and as a future educator, I have to acknowledge that I will be teaching students living in a low socioeconomic status.

In the world of education, there is a lot of emphasis put
