One sip. One sip of alcohol is all it takes to ruin your own life and many others. In today’s society, there is an ongoing amount of controversies pertaining to the legal drinking age, which is currently twenty-one. However, with the diverse opinions on this topic, there is a realization that involves responsibility and adulthood. Drinking should be restricted under the current set legal age, due to the responsibility required to themselves and others. This is more than just risking the lives of other people, but ending their own life by one mistake. The legal drinking age should not be modified to below twenty-one. Along with lowering the drinking age comes danger and risks, affecting the lives of innocent people all over.

Eighteen is the age of adulthood in the United States, which entails the individual with the right to vote, serve on juries, get married, and to join the military- which includes risking one’s life (5,6). Along with these rights, adults should have the opportunity to make their own decisions on alcohol consumption. One should have the characteristic of maturity, being able to assemble their own choices. If one abuses the liability they hold while drinking, they are risking their own life, misunderstanding the point of drinking in general.

Overall, along with the freedom of being an adult, lowering the drinking age can put an individual in danger, as well as the people around them (29).Younger children and adolescents begin to binge when they start to drink, which makes them more likely to be to engaged in behaviors that harm themselves and others.
