IDENTIFY: The first artwork I have chosen to analyze is from gallery 311, the golden age of Dutch painting. The artwork titled “Lucretia, 1666” was painted by Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn and its completion date was in 1666. Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijm was a Dutch painter who was born in 1606 and died in 1669. Subsequently by manipulating the paint you can see the tears welling in her eyes. Using small intricate brushstrokes and the color white he has individualized the beads in the headdress on her head and the one bead in the middle of her forehead. Rembrandts use of the darker color in the background simplifies the space and thrusts Lucretia into the foreground. Implied motion is vividly demonstrated with the knife in Lucretia’s hand and the wound which is displayed on her gown. The reflection of light can be seen in the beads I the headdress, the chain across the midsection of her gown, the gown itself and along the knife. The welling of tear in her eyes shows that very pain and inner mental anguish. Her stance is that of nobility holding on to the chord waiting to dies and keeping herself upright shows her power. Her hand still clutching the knife after she has stabber herself shows her true emotional strength as a woman of nobility. The colors alone in this artwork give a somber mood of what was taking place, making the viewer feel helpless. Personally, this brings me back to when a friend of mine committed suicide when I was 15 years old.
