The story of Romeo and Juliet is widely known for the lover’s tragic ending. Some argue that they are actually in lust, not love. Their are key moments in this play that show that Romeo and Juliet’s love is not love, but it is lust. In Shakespeare’s version of the play, they are less in love, but in lust because they rush and are impatient, refuse the advice of older and wiser characters, and Romeo is simply trying to find someone to replace Rosaline.
Romeo and Juliet rush into their love extremely quickly. In act two scene two, shortly after the main characters have just met, Juliet is already telling Romeo that she would like to marry him. “Three words, dear Romeo, and good night indeed. If that thy bent of love be honorable, Thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow, By one that I’ll procure to come to thee, Where and what time thou wilt perform the rite, And all my fortunes at thy foot I’ll lay And follow thee my lord throughout the world.”(Shakespeare 2.2.149-155). The two have not even known each other for a full twenty-four hours and they are already confessing their love to each other. As result to this quote, Romeo and Juliet decide to get married the very next afternoon, with the help of Friar Lawrence.

Evidence for this is said by Friar Lawrence, who is more knowledgeable than Romeo and Juliet. “Holy Saint Francis, what a change is here! Is Rosaline, that thou didst love so dear, So soon forsaken? Young men’s love then lies Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes.”(2.3.69-72).
