The Visit sees M. Night Shyamalan back in form, which is something I’ve wanted to see happen for quite some time. His film is considerably funnier that I was expecting, and often is actually a parody of himself. Shyamalan wisely pokes fun at his self-seriousness, and creates a tiny little movie of surprising dramatic heft. While the found-footage gimmick doesn’t always work, I was pleasantly surprised that the film featured none of the cheats other films employing that style often use. Everything you see in The Visit is supposed to be the documentary our main character creates. There are no glaring musical jump-scare cues, or obvious additions added in post. My impression so far of the movie “Signs” by M. Night Shyamalan (released in July of 2002) is that I’m greatly impressed by the detail the director and screenwriter put into it.
