The views of M.T Buckley towards being born and Stephen Edgar’s views about books are displayed through the use of conceit. Both authors are using similar styles to write about their opinion's regarding different topics. M.T Buckley uses the similarities between being born and being a prisoner in World War 2 to create an extended metaphor in his poem. In "Birthday", it reads the allusion "Unit? 82nd newborn.” By using the word “newborn”, the quote is referring to the 82nd airborne, which was during World War 2, and also to a child who was just born. In the beginning of the poem, the author mentions jumping into the world. By saying that, he is talking about going into warzone and also of a child going into the world. Part of the structure, is the poem’s shape and how it looks like. In both poems, the author created a certain shape for the poem so that the reader would continue to read on. In “Birthday”, M. T Buckley created a small poem with short lines so that the reader would continue on. The addition of short lines added suspense, which allowed the reader to not get bored. In “The Secret Life of Books”, the author created five stanzas that contain six lines of different lengths. Because Stephen Edgar included several stanzas in the poem, the reader would want to continue to read and not to stop in the middle of the stanza. After finishing one stanza, the reader would want to go onto the next. Another part of structure is the title. In both poems, the title is an important element in the story. It assists the reader to understand the story and the comparisons that are being made. The title of the first poem, which is birthday, helps the reader to realize that the comparison being made is about being born, the day of birth which is the title, and being a paratrooper in World War 2. Without this title, the reader would struggle to understand the poem and the metaphor that was being made. In the second poem, which is titled “The Secret Life of Books”, helps the reader recognize that the story is about books and it is being compared with an invalid. It is the only part of the poem where the word “book” is mentioned. Without it, the reader would not understand what the author was trying to
