The story of Macbeth begins when three witches tell Macbeth, a thane in Scotland, that he will be king. To make the prophecy become a reality, Macbeth goes on a killing spree to secure and keep his spot on the throne. It ends when an army lead by some of his former friends and thanes take him down and restore peace. For our project, we acted out Act II, Scene III of the play. In this scene, Macduff, a friend of Macbeth finds King Duncan dead and everyone is trying to figure out who did it. When filming this scene, we had some trouble with a lack of costumes, a lack of memorization and a lack of focus. At the start of filming,we thought that we would have access to costumes that the drama department has. Upon asking Mr. Berkowitz, one of the drama teachers, we discovered that we wouldn’t be able to get the costumes we wanted. In any theater production, be it a live performance, TV show or movie, memorizing lines is crucial. If the actor doesn’t have to read their lines from someone offstage, they are free to focus on other things such as tone or blocking. Reading from a script can produce bland speech. This bores the audience and makes the actor look unprofessional. Even though not everyone is great at memorizing and acting, tons of footage is the group failing to read lines. The text was too far away from them, which resulted in pauses and sometimes outright failure to read a line. At certain points, it looked like characters weren’t talking to other characters. Instead, they were looking just offstage at a script. In the end, they looked comedic and got a laugh but filming and having this happen was infuriating.
