In this weeks Hollywood Film class we focused on the genre Comedy. Comedy is a very interesting and unique genre because of how the story is portrayed and played out. Comedy films are used to make the audience laugh. Comedies are light-hearted dramas, used to amuse, entertain, and create enjoyment through laughter. The comedy genre exaggerates the situation through the language, action, and how the characters are portrayed. Comedy films can shed light on the frustrations of life but, provide relief through laughter and help the viewer escape the stresses of day-to-day life. They usually portray elements that include over exaggeration, light heartedness, and heavy use of stereotypes. They also almost always have happy endings. Many sub genres are used off of comedy as well, action comedy, comedy horror, comedy sci-fi, romantic comedy, etc. are a few examples. Comedy films first appeared during the early 1900s when movies were gaining ground in the public eye. Because of limited technology, early comedy films were silent and focused on visual humor. Madea’s Family Reunion is a comedy film made in 2006. This film shows all the signs of being a comedy throughout the entire film. The writer and director Tyler Perry uses heavy African American stereotypes to create laughter and shed light to real life issues at the same time. For example men are “inherently predatory, abusive, and good-for-nothing; women are immoral, manipulative, and bound to miserable fates.” This quote was taken from The Daily Beast. This quote is talking about the many different characters and the ways they act in this film. He also over exaggerates many situations and uses sexual references to create laughter from the audience. As this film continues these themes are used over and over. Like a typical comedy film a happy ending comes at the conclusion even though it seems like a happy ending will never come throughout the entire
