Magical Realism Essay

What is magical realism? Is it an escapist fiction? No, magical realism explores and conveys the truth about the reality that exist in or existed in a story or novel. It tells stories from people’s point of view and is considered to be real in their reality, however, not ours. In addition, magical realism is presented as an everyday occurrence in stories even if fictional aspects do happen. It is seen as ordinary as a desert, rain, or a mountain.

One element of magical realism is metamorphosis, a transformation of a figure that is seen as ordinary in their reality, but not in our reality. Near the end of the movie, Big Fish by Tim Burden, William Bloom takes his father,

William first has to help his father escape the hospital and rush him to the lake. Once they get near the lake, William gets off the car and carries his dad down, where they then see all of Edwards loved ones. They all seem to be happy and joyful for Edward when he is about to get into the lake. Once they both are in the water, William then slowly lowers his father into the lake, transforming into an actual big fish. Thus concluding that William didn’t find his dad’s transformation unrealistic. Instead, he just smiles and stares as his father swims away deep into the lake. Furthermore, Rudolfo Anaya, author of Bless Me, Ultima, also shows metamorphosis in his novel.
