Mohandas Gandhi, who was born in 1869, had a father who was Hindu, and a mother who was a Jainist. They both taught him early on the qualities that made him a great leader throughout his life. Everywhere he went he was assailed with racist comments by British people. Everyday he did menial tasks meant for the “Untouchables” or people at the lowest part of the Caste System, combined with that and his acts that helped bring freedom to his people people started calling him Mahatma, or “Great Soul” He didn’t like how people were treated in their own country by British, and also disliked the Caste System. So, through a series of non-violent speeches and marches, he eventually managed to help India get their independence from the British Empire. What made Gandhi’s non-violent movement work? Three tactics that made Gandhi’s nonviolent-movement work is civil disobedience and discipline, accepting jail time, and embracing the enemy. In Document C the Indian protesters were put in jail and given hard labor. He said that if the were put in jail for protesting, then he should be given a harsher punishment because he was the one who got them together to protest. This tactic contributed to the success of Gandhi’s movement because the British thought that putting the Indian protesters in jail would be punishment and weaken their resolve.
