Maine is a very diverse, northernmost state on the east coast. We have four very distinct seasons, each come with their own challenges and benefits. Maine has many geographic features. Such as a beautiful coastline, mountains, large farmlands, and numerous bodies of water. Today the climate and weather of Maine depend on the time of year. However, 2,000 years ago, Maine was described as a tundra. Although enhanced technology has led to an abundance of differences between the way of life now versus 2,000 years ago we still experience many similarities, such as we still live off the coastline, to survive, thrive, and develop. The most significant similarity between Mainers and Historic Mainers, the often changing climate, and the use of our natural resources. Depending on the season, it affects the way we dress. Because of the fast-paced growth and development in technology and population, in Maine, they are able to focus on one aspect (their career), that may not be necessary for survival. The Native Americans, however, were forced to focus on farming, hunting, medicine/health, making homes, and taking care of children as well as elders. If they did not focus on these things their clan, tribe, and family would suffer tremendously. One example of this is, in the winter when it gets very cold, we just turn our heat on. However, the Native Americans could not do this, they would have to move their entire tribe inland. Another example is when we need food we just run to the grocery store and stock up on what we need. The tribes, could not do this, they needed to plant and hunt what they thought they would need. They often would not have enough and go hungry for a series of
