World War I began a new era on how wars would be fought due to changes in weapon technology, the introduction of poison gas, the use of U-Boats, fighting via trenches, and the use of aircraft bombings. These changes marked the first time a war would be fought in an unconventional manner. The biggest change in weapon technology was that in the machine gun (McLean, 2015). Opposed to traditional guns the machine guns were used during the war on both the ground and in the air. This resulted in war territories called “no man’s land”, due to the fact that the machine gun and fire many rounds in quick succession. The advancement of the machine gun changed the way the war would be fought, in that the war would not have to be fought in trenches where each side would be battling for inches of territory. The impact that trench warfare had on war was that many soldiers died not as a direct result from combat, but rather due to diseases that spread rapidly through the trenches (First World War, 2015). The sinking of Lusitania in 1915 which would eventually lead to the German forces stopping submarine patrol to keep the United States neutral. In 1917 German than started submarine patrol once again and the result was the United States entering the war. These were some of the key events in which new technology and weapons were deployed. The main changes in warfare is that the advancements created more destruction, more death, and made the daily lives of soldiers living in the trenches horrific. These events would lay the foundation on how future wars would be fought and how the extent of destruction would be decreased as weapons and technology further
