In three novels that were read in Accelerated English 10, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, All My Sons by Arthur Miller, and Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger, guilt is a major theme in character’s decision-making and character development. Faber from Fahrenheit 451 has decided to join the rebellion against the government, Chris Keller from All My Sons has decided to start a life of his own, and Holden from Catcher in The Rye has decided to grow up.
Faber is an old man in the world of Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. In the past he was an English teacher and when the anti-book movement has started Faber didn’t do anything and went into hiding. When Guy Montague finds out his secret Faber agrees to help, because he believes it is partially his fault that books got banned. In his case the decisions made by guilt have helped to advance the story and develop the main protagonist. It also has shown the change in Faber from an old scared man into a wise strategist who stayed on Montague’s side until the end of the story.

After being kicked out of school Holden wonders around New York City and at first decides to run away and live alone as a forest ranger. He goes home to say good bye to his sister. As she decides to go with him Holden refuses and after thinking for a little bit he understands what of a childish decision he was going to make. Feeling guilty about the situation, Holden takes his sister to a carousel and decides to stay.
