Making Modern Toughness Analysis

As society progresses, qualities that are admired and prized often morph into different attributes to fit modern societal needs or become obsolete; those who judge the young for lacking of some quality the previous generation possess, fail to realize their judgement is clouded by nostalgia and bias. The issue with the orchid generation is a controversial topic with the older generation as they believe the future successors of the world are becoming too PC (politically correct) and emotionally delicate. David Brooks published a piece for the New York Times titled Making Modern Toughness; it address several issues with the assumptions the senior generation has towards the young. Emotional resilience is not a static entity, the ability to overcome obstacles and adapt to hardship depends on passion.; Brooks stated that the young people of today are one of the most accomplished group of people, not only did they succeed in more than their predecessor; the youth are the only group of people that possess uninhibited potential . Brooks refer to an “ethos” or the purpose of life, the passion that pushes and challenges people to succeed and follow their dreams. The resilience that the older generation deamed was based out of necessity, when the world was limited and close minded; people became cold and shut-off and this became viewed as emotional resilience. Instead of the unhealthy and often unobtainable traditional notion of emotional resilience, Brooks claims that the youth today should find their ethos,a passion they would live for even if that something that can result in failure and hardship. An ethos would push the young generation and boost their resilience as they would have something to fight for. Brooks believes that the fragile ego of today’s young is cause by a lack of aim and direction, without a goal they wander aimlessly searching for approval. Their past experience and newfound understanding of life’s obstacles clouds their empathy, causing them to look at their younger, inexperienced successors as soft and weak. David Brooks article titled Making Modern Toughness clarified misconceptions and revealed the true rationale for perceived emotional fragility in the young generation. The traditional notion of emotional fragility that the older generation does not apply to the new generation due to difference in societal and cultural changes; perceived weakness is uncalloused emotion. Young people who posses ethos will have the passion and a direction to focus their effort too. helping them get over that impede them and their dream, even if it has hardship and pain.
