I remember somewhere in the early 2000s when I came across a book entitled, The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell. This book had a huge impact on my life particularly due to the message that the author was trying to pass across. I was initially born and raised in Haiti. However, at the age of six, we migrated to the United States. Since then, I have been back to Haiti several times to visit relatives. However, when I was growing up, I could not help but notice problems that people were facing. Not just here in the United States but in my country as well. I have witnessed how poverty, domestic violence, drugs, early pregnancies and all that can ruin a life. All these developments around me inspired me to do something about. Therefore, when I came across this book Malcolm Gladwell I was strongly inspired to pursue a career in social work. Each Saturday and Sunday we would go and feed some of the homeless people in several neighborhoods within NY City. After working with this organization, I joined a community college where after two years I knew I wanted to pursue a degree in social work. I continued working with several organizations on the idea of furthering my education struck me. I realized that education is a lifelong process. There is no one time anyone can claim that I have learned enough. Therefore, I enrolled for my bachelor's degree in social work while at the same time working. It took a lot of discipline to balance the demands of the job, family, and education.
