As Malcolm X narrates his pathway to education he makes sure to as well emphasizes its importance. He stresses the value of learning, comparing it to other cherished desires such as freedom. Throughout his essay he ironically relates freedom to education to delivered the message that through education, one can achieve freedom. Prior to his incarceration, Malcolm X has all the freedom he could imagine. He went out as he pleased, and talked to whomever he desired. However, ironically, to him this was the period in his life he felt the most restraint.
