Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X were two of the most influential figures who lead the Civil Rights movement. During the Civil Rights movement African Americans fought to end segregation and gain the right to vote without restriction. They fought for basic human rights they'd been denied for centuries. They marched and gained support from white people and powerful leaders all over the world While both these men wanted change for African Americans, their end goals were very different. Martin Luther King Jr.believed that all people were equal, that everyone deserved the same chance. He knew that inside everyone was the same, no matter what color they were on the outside. One of his most famous quotes comes from his I Have a Dream speech, when he says, “I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” He means that no matter what someone looks like, how you view them should be based on who they are as a person. MLK believed in peaceful protest and modeled his actions in the Civil Rights movement after what Gandhi did in India. He knew that when the press covered what was happening, white people would see black people being beaten and killed by white people without even fighting back. MLK said in his speech, the Quest for Peace and Justice, “Non violence is a powerful and just weapon, which cuts without wounding and ennobles the man who wields it. It is a sword that heals.” Malcolm X believed that people should generally be kind, but they need to defend themselves when attacked. He delivered the powerful message, “Concerning nonviolence: it is criminal to teach a man not to defend himself when he is the constant victim of brutal attacks.” in his A Declaration of Independence
