There is a Canyon in Malibu that I was named after. To the west is the beautiful California coast and the too the east is a large Canyon full of rolling hills. Over fifteen years ago, my parents met just miles from this Canyon.

When my mother was 26, she was accepted into the Pepperdine University School of Law. She decided to move 2900 miles to the opposite coast. She moved from Norfolk, Virginia where she grew up and attended college. When she arrived she got a job at a restaurant where she met my father. My parents quickly fell in love in Malibu and frequently visited many of the exquisite spots it had to offer, including Decker Canyon. Two years later they moved to Tahoe City to open up Bars and Restaurants along its stunning shores. They were married in August of 1998 beside the dazzling blue water. A year after they were married they were expecting their first child.

My mother named her first daughter, Caitlin, after a random person she met at a soccer field. She did not know any other Caitlins at the time so she decided to give my sister this name. As Caitlin got older, the name increasingly became more and more popular. My mom did not want to make that mistake again with my name. Ironically, she made the same mistake two years later when she gave birth to a boy. She named him Ashton and a few months later Ashton Kutcher became popular. Everyone thought that she named her son after a celebrity. Needless to say she was not a big fan of Ashton Kutcher and is still not pleased about it
