Mama Nadi is a victim because of the way she was treated before owning her business. She was “ruined” and left alone to fend for herself (67). After being raped by so many men, she still had the resolve to build a better life for herself and she did by building her bar. However, once she had the bar she started following the patterns of her abusers in taking advantage of others. All the women that Mama Nadi had living with her were used to gain a profit. They were not paid with money, but rather with lodging and food. The girls, such as Sophie and Salima, were simply used to generate money for Mama Nadi. In this way, she was exploiting them the same way she was exploited. She only did this because she cared about her business. The war brought in many soldiers to gain a profit off of to keep her business thriving. Even though she did not agree with the way the war was going, she endured it to make money. Mama Nadi did not want to abandon her business that she had built from nothing just to escape the war. That is why she treated the women living with her the way she did.
