Jesus Doesn't Like Jerks The central idea of Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" is that even if someone is religious, that person can still be a jerk. The story starts with a grandmother not wanting to go with her son, Bailey, and his family on a road trip to Florida, because she's selfish and wants to visit her friends in Tennessee. On the way there, the grandmother remembers an old plantation she once visited and convinces Bailey to go to the house. The road to the house was hilly. The car flipped after the grandmother's cat attacked Bailey. A few minutes later, a car came up: in it was three people, one was The Misfit. The grandmother tried to reason with The Misfit while his accomplices killed her son and his family. She told him that he should pray to Jesus and that Jesus would save him. He killed the grandmother after she said, "Why you're one of my babies. You're one of my children!" and reached out to him. The Misfit said that the grandmother would've been a better person if someone had shot her every minute of her life. The first opposing force in the story is the grandmother not wanting to go to Florida, but her son and his family want to.
