Last year I unfortunately lost a team leader due to family issues abroad, his departure was very sudden and left me with no time to fill the position before he left. Because the home is only small his departure was felt throughout the team as it left only one other team leader. Because of this I had to take on team leader duties such as shift leading, this meant that some of my duties as a deputy manager had to be put on hold. Internal and external advertisements were placed to try and fill the position, however due to the process of employing new staff in the health and social care industry it would not be a quick solution. So during a team meeting my manager and I spoke with the team and explained what had been done so far to fill the team leader position and explained that we would be looking for a support worker to take the role of acting team leader to help in the mean time. I explained that anyone who is interested would need to write us a small statement detailing why they would like to take this opportunity and what skills they feel they could bring to the role. One support worker applied for the role, to maintain confidentiality I will refer to her as B. B had been a support worker in the home for around 10 months when she applied for the acting team leader post, in previous supervision meetings with me B had expressed that she would like to aim to become a team leader in the future.
