Should the United States have mandatory military conscription? In 1863, Congress enacted Conscription in the United States with the passing of the Civil War Military Draft Act. From 1940 until 1973, every male or immigrant who filed for citizenship between the age of twenty and forty-five was to enlist in the armed services to fill vacancies. I feel that this was wrong and unnecessary now; it should be the sense of patriotism and commitment towards our country that should be the reason behind enlisting in the military service. Patriotism, the love, loyalty and commitment for your country should be the motivation towards enlisting.
