1. Discuss the contributions of Mansa Musa to the greatness of Mali empire.
Mansa Musa was a great ruler of the Mali empire. He helped the kingdom to grow and thrive. He implemented many systems and values that greatly benefitted the country. Mansa Musa was not the sole contributor to the greatness of the Mali empire; his predecessor, Sundiata laid the foundations for the rise of the strong empire. During Mansa Musa’s reign, from 1307 to 1359, though, “the Mali Empire grew to its widest possible limits and reached the height of its power, glory and wealth. Mali’s great rise to fame and wealth was mainly the result of the work of two kings…- Mansa Kankan Musa and Mansa Sulayman” (Boahen. 1986, 64). Building off of the foundations laid by Sundiata, Mansa Musa led the Mali empire to greatness. Mansa Musa contributed significantly to the areas of politics, commerce, and religion, while he was in power.
Politically, Mansa Musa expanded the borders of Mali through conquests and military campaigns. In his desire to obtain loyal and devoted service, Mansa Musa also implemented a system of national honors to recognize those who were loyal to him and the empire. Mansa Musa accomplished commercial prosperity for his empire through conquering and controlling nearby salt producing regions and gold districts. The Mali empire’s control of these trades allowed the citizens to prosper and become very wealthy; they grew accustomed to a high standard of living. Mansa Musa developed a strong army to provide protection for these important trade routes.
