The March on Washington was a huge event caused by continuing discrimination towards black people. The March on Washington met annually every year to fight for economic equality. Finally in 1963 Blacks got together to advocate against the passage of the Civil Rights act. Started by leaders Phillip Randolph and Baynard Austin, this new march was expected to bring in over hundreds of thousands of people. President Kennedy didn’t show much enthusiasm during the time that the March was being organized, but the black leaders wouldn’t be dissuaded from what they had in mind. The March on Washington was a huge success, and more than 200,000 black and white Americans shared a day full of speeches, songs, and prayers. Martin Luther King’s speech was the highlight of the event, and has become a famous civil movement for years to follow. There were many newspapers that had coverage on the March of Washington, some had more than others let’s start with the New York Times. The New York Times had the most and most detail oriented coverage of all the other newspapers. The New York Times focused its Point Of View quite a bit on King’s “I Have a Dream Speech”, and had put the March as its main highlight on the front page the very next day. What they didn’t fail to mention was he aggressiveness of the crowd and speakers and how they wanted freedom and that they wanted it right away much like the Defender. They only briefly mentioned King’s desire for Brotherhood amongst all.
