March On Washington Rhetorical Analysis

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a hero and a leader for not only the African American community but all colored races fighting against segregation. Dr. King lead the civil rights movement by gathering supporters to protest peacefully against segregation by marching through towns or leading boycotts on certain things including bus transportation. He did this so he show that the colored community needed their natural born rights. On August 28, 1963 Dr. King stood on the lincoln memorial steps before 300,000 people, which is known as the March on Washington. This also has become known as the “I have a dream…” Speech which gave a message to the country that the colored community deserved their rights, this message helped changed the minds of many people, establish solutions and laws that were put in effect to help that community. This speeches persuasive message can be broken down into the use of several effective rhetorical devices.

The rhetorical devices of anaphora and allusion strongly impacted the overall message of the speech. The anaphora “let freedom ring…” can be noted as to showing that this matter needs to be acted upon to create a more perfect union. In using the allusion “guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” from the declaration of independence, this one phrase put more pressure on the U.S. government of the fact they still have not given those rights to the colored community. These two rhetorical devices, along with many others gave this speeches message a greater impact on the millions citizens of America.
