his first stamp represents Venice, Italy during the time when Marco Polo was growing up which was the 13th century (why it’s titled “13th Century Venice”). The map (of Italy) and the Holy Bible on the stamp both symbolize the education Polo grew up with as a child. He was given the average education of a boy in his time. He learned to understand the texts within the Bible, the common theology of the Latin Church, and to know of the modern authors of his time. Things Polo knew of outside of the common education that many others didn’t were the ways of a merchant. Marco Polo was born to a wealthy merchant family. His father and uncle were rich jewel merchants. Polo knew of things such as being able to read a map which was a skill merchants had to acquire. Since Marco’s education consisted of having to be able to understand the Bible and learning to read maps I decided to put the Bible and a map of Italy on the stamp. The ship and sea on the stamp go together and represent two things. First of all,the Polos used ships to cross many different bodies of water so that they could reach their destinations. One specific body of water the Polos crossed was the Mediterranean Sea to reach Acre. Another thing that the boat symbolizes is as you can see it is a bit more “worn out.” This represents the boats that the Polos came to in Hormuz that were untrustworthy and obviously would not hold up for the entire sea journey. Due to coming upon these useless boats, the Polos had to reroute and head for the city of Kashgar by land instead. The third picture on the stamp is a horse. The horse was a big part of the Polo’s rerouted journey to Kashgar. They were only able to get through the Pamir Mountains by horseback and never would’ve been able to get through them without the
