Famously known for saying the phrase, “Let them eat cake,” the last queen of France, Marie Antoinette was often blamed for the economic crash during her reign, French Revolution, and her excessive gambling, and shopping. However, because of the constant pressure put on Antoinette by the noble’s disapproval, relentless coercion by the royal family to conceive an heir, and her husbands unaffectionate attitude towards her, she was put in a position, starting at just fifteen, to lead a life of spending money to show France that Antoinette held power over her husband and the rest of the royal family.
