Marijuana is a harmless medical herb that has been legally shut out from society for too long. This medical herb would provide billions of dollars of tax revenue while treating and curing people. Marijuana has so many uses and so many different things that can be done with it besides even smoking it. This should be done now since even Obama agrees with decriminalizing marijuana when he stated in 2004 “ I think the war on drugs has been a failure, and I think we need to rethink and decriminalize our marijuana laws”. Ever since marijuana has been made illegal, the billions in tax revenue have been used to fund criminal activities. Marijuana should be legalized now and cut the criminals short of that money. Marijuana can generate a lot of money in additional tax revenue. According to IB Times “Professor of economics at new York university, estimate that legalizing drugs would save the government approximately 41.3 billion annually on expenditures related to the enforcement of prohibition.” In other words legalizing marijuana would increase the tax revenue dramatically which could be used for education, Better streets and improve the United States as a whole. That tax revenue would help the United States with their deficit problem while taking away the money from the criminals, therefore reducing crime. IB Times also stated that “legalization would reduce the state and federal deficit by eliminating expenditure on prohibition enforcement—arrest, prosecution and incarceration.” The government would be spending a lot less on the court system and would be able to be spent on something more productive which would lead to the next reason. Marijuana has a lot of medical uses and could provide cures and treatment for ill patients. According to psychiatrist Tod H. Mikuriga “He believed the symptoms of over 200 ailments could be treated with marijuana including stuttering, insomnia, premenstrual syndrome, and writer’s cramp.” In other words, the medical industry would be able to cure or treat hundreds of patients with the use of marijuana’s chemical properties. Marijuana has already been used in other countries which are stated in livescience.com. “Canada, New Zealand and several countries in Europe have approved the nasal spray sativex, which uses purified cannabinoids derived from marijuana for the treatment of cancer pain and muscle spasms in multiple sclerosis.” This means that other countries have already took advantage of marijuana to treat their severely ill patients.
