Marijuana Banned Marijuana is a dry, shredded green and brown mix of leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds from the hemp plant Cannabis sativa. The main psychoactive chemical in marijuana is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC (NIDA, 2014). It is a mind-altering drug that affects the way an individual thinks, and it remains in the body for weeks or longer. Otherwise, Marijuana smoke contains 50% to 70% more cancer-causing substances than tobacco smoke. From these facts, marijuana should be banned instead of legality because it affects mental health, physical health, and people life. First, it affects mental health. Marijuana makes people get “high” - a sense of relaxation, happiness, sleepiness, and colors appear more intense, music sounds better. It impacts the neuron, and seriously, long-term using can make mental illness. In addition, it reduces memory, brain performance, and IQ. For evidence, a recent Northwestern University study found that marijuana users have abnormal brain structure and poor memory and that chronic marijuana abuse may lead to brain changes resembling schizophrenia. The study also reported that the younger the person starts using marijuana, the worse the effects become. Second, it affects physical health. Cigarette is considered toxic, but marijuana is worse than that. For example, a single cannabis joint could cause as much damage to the lungs as up to five regular cigarettes. In addition, it contains cancerogenic mutagens that can affect people's lungs. Especially, it is addictive if we use regularly. It causes sleeplessness, anxiety, or depression, increases heart rate.
