Mother and widow Marion Coutts’ autobiography, “There is going to be a destruction… the obliteration of a person”, writes about a specific time of when her husband was diagnosed with a tumor. Coutts purpose of writing this devastating tragedy in her life, is to recount the life of her husband for the audience to make a connection with someone in their lives with cancer. She wanted to let the audience know that during hard times, they should rely on the emotional support of friends and families. Coutts adopts a warm tone in order to characterize the importance of how love can get through life’s pain. In the beginning of Marion Coutts’ autobiography, her emotions dealing with her husband’s tumor changed by updating her husband’s status sent out via email to her friends and family. Before Coutts and her husband decided to send emails about his health, she was not emotionally stable and compares herself being a “ship” that has “exploded” in a “fireball”. Her emotion after finding out that Tom had cancer was just like how anyone else would have felt. However, those emotions did not stop her for trying to live out her life. Marion and her husband,Tom, reacted by reaching out to friends and family for emotional support. Quickly thereafter, Marion’s emotion changed from being down to reading “offers of help and love”. From there, friends and family were able to show their love and support for Tom and Marion, but especially for her because she was going to lose her husband anytime. The emotional support she received from them, was the reason why she was able to go through all the emotional rollercoaster she had to endure. Therefore without them, Coutts would not have been able to write an autobiography about her life to share her message of always having friends and families there for one
