Imagine being stranded alone on Mars with no contact to human civilization. This was an average day in the life of Mark Watney from Andy Weir’s, The Martian. Mark Watney was apart of the Ares III crew that was supposed to go to Mars for NASA on a 1 month expedition to learn more about the planet. Unfortunately the crew was forced to evacuate after only 6 days into the mission due to an abrupt, threatening windstorm. Things went south when Mark Watney was pierced by a reception antenna leaving the rest of the crew believing he was dead. The crew left Watney unwillingly behind, since the team commander did not want to jeopardize any more lives of her team. Although Watney survived the storm and accident, he now had to figure out how to continue living with no communication, minimal life supplies, and everyone thinking he was dead. …show more content…
They were extremely relieved once they figured out that Watney was planning a trip to retrieve Pathfinder, which is an old satellite that NASA lost contact with in 1997. Once Watney was able to get Pathfinder working he was ecstatic, “Yes!” They said, “Yes!” “I haven’t been this excited about a “yes” since prom night!” (118) Since Pathfinder doesn’t have the modern technology it took longer and was more difficult to use. Even though the camera was able to rotate 360 degrees, the normal alphabet wouldn’t works so he used ASCII which is how computers manage characters. NASA constantly wanted information on how all the machines are running, “They want constant updates on every Hab system, and they’ve got a room full of people trying to micromanage my crops. It’s awesome to have a bunch of dispshits on Earth telling me, a botansist, how to grow plants.” (146) Still, Watney was glad that he was able to be in contact with them in case there was an emergency.
