Mark Watney In The Martian

Mark Watney in The Martian is one of the most optimistic characters I've seen in entertainment, I have to admit. He's isolated in the middle of a freezing dust-land that barely anyone on Earth knows about, and he still manages to have the will to live, even if he knows he might die any second of the day (or sol). Isolation can lead to loneliness, stress, and other health problems, but how is Watney still capable of pulling through, given his situation. I think there are 2 contributing factors, the amount of tasks he has to finish to keep him occupied, and how he logs himself after every sol.

My first point is he has so many tasks to finish that he's so occupied. For starters, he's trying to live. That's a big enough goal itself to pull through.
