Millions of people immigrated to America from all over the world for better opportunities and freedoms, from the 1700’s to the 1900’s. Once finding their new home in America, life was difficult and not always what they expected. The Markey family is an example of immigrants that came over from another country to make a better life here in the United States. In 1736, Marcus Merky, age 45, and Hans Davit Merky, age 17, came to America on the ship, Princess Augusta. Hans Davit and his father, left Switzerland and arrived in Philadelphia. According to The Princess Augusta Experience, the journey took twelve weeks and four days during the summer months to sail across the Atlantic Ocean. There were 330 passengers and 50 crew on board. Michael, their eldest son was the 3rd generation of Markey’s in the United States. Michael Markey married Elizabeth and had six children. He was a farmer like his grandfather and father. He was also a woodworker and made spinning wheels and reels. Michael was a member of the Church of the Brethren and walked six miles to church. According to the History of the Markey Family 1750-1979, two characteristics of the Markey family were farming and selling their products at the local markets. The other important characteristic was their church life. A local paper printed “no Markey’s, no markets” in one of their news articles.
Michael’s eldest son, David inherited the family farm. David married Elenora and had fourteen children. These were the grandparents of Evelyn Romaine (Markey) Chronister. During an interview with Evelyn, she remembers that her grandparents didn’t have electricity. They used oil lanterns for lighting in the evenings.
