Marsha Norman is an American playwright born to Billie Lee and Bertha Mae Williams on September 21, 1947 in Louisville, Kentucky. She was raised under a religious fundamentalist household by her mother and father. This and her southern upbringing paved the way for here future writing style and success. During her years in high school she cultivated her skills as a writer, joining the yearbook staff and the school newspaper. She was awarded a scholarship and moved to Georgia to attend Agnes Scott College. During her studies at Agnes Scott she would meet her first husband, Michael Norman, her English professor at the college.
