As mentioned before, microbes are very important to human survival. Perhaps the largest service administered by microbes is their role in the immune system as they are one third of the body's natural defense (Blaser 32). Microbes "secrete substances which are posionous to other bacteria" (Blaser 33). When antibiotics are continuously used, microbes die as well, hindering the progress of the body's first line of defense: the immune system. Research scientist, Martin Blaser, describes the ecosystem between humans and microbes as a fragile cooperation. "Don't mess with it, because then all bets are off" (39), meaning a potential disaster for humans. People microbes for granted, when, in reality, humans could not survive without the help to the immune system. …show more content…
For this purpose, medication should be utilized. As Parents Magazine clarifies, often times the typical uses for antibiotics for children are unnecessary. Antibiotics are not suggested for sinus infections, bronchitis, and pneumonia unless symptoms are severe, and sore throats if if it is solely strep (Pfaff 80-81). Using antibiotics only when symptoms are severe cut down much of the use. As a result, less bacteria would develop a resistance along with a decrease of chemicals sitting idly in the stomach. There are many ways to boost an immune system, and of course no way make it invincible. While individuals may be willing to get enough sleep and eat healthy, truly testing these defenses is not well-practiced. When a slight flu comes, pills are the first plan of action. How are the soldiers of our bodies expected to know how to defeat the enemy when they have had no practice? The body need experience of fighting smaller battles to be prepared the larger ones that medication cannot
