Martin Guerre respects his father, but has a difficult relationship with him as he is suppressed by the patriarchal society in which he lives. Although Martin is a grown man with a family, he is legally considered a minor while his father is alive. Martin can be freed from his father; however, it would threaten the authority that he would need once in that position. Monsieur Guerre's paternal authority must be absolute for the family to prosper, which Martin accepts, but cannot live with. Martin participating in the bear hunt and planting his father's unused grain are worthy acts, which benefit the household, but must be punished because he does not have his father's permission. Madame Guerre submits to her husband's authority, although she
