Martin Luther King: A Modern Day Prophetic Figure

Using Borg's (2001) definition of a prophetic figure, I believe that Martin Luther King is a modern day contemporary prophetic figure. King brought hope to the oppressed by challenging society's normalcy, he kept hope alive by declaring his dreams and visions for a better world and most importantly he had an intimate relationship with God. He challenged society by taking a stand against racism and segregation. He acted to force a change within the world and encouraged others to do so. King acted on the behalf of those who could not and therefore he inspired those who were silent to act. He kept hope alive by declaring his hopes and dreams to the world through his ‘I have a dream speech' where he clearly defines the hopes for equality and justice
