“Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor it must be demanded by the oppressed”(Martin Luther King Jr). Some people argue that freedom is never given; it must be demanded. In the texts “I Have a Dream” by Martin Luther King Jr; “The Censors” by Luisa Valenzuela and “Persepolis 2” by Marjane Satrapi show how freedom should be demanded by standing together and fighting for what belongs to them.
The speech “I Have a Dream” by Martin Luther King Jr demonstrates how freedom must be demanded beca thousands of citizens came together to listen to Martin Luther King’s speech. The quote “He knows that all letters pass from hand to hand… in the censorship office”(89) shows how they don't have the right to express themselves and share their thoughts and feelings. The citizens became censors as an act of protest. “This was Juan’s sound plan when he like many others applied for a censorship job-not because he had a calling, or a needed job…”(90). The quote shows how citizens do not join the censors because they need a job or they want to join, they join because they want freedom because they want to be able to say what they want and express themselves.
In the graphic novel “Persepolis 2” by Marjane Satrapi, woman do not have the same rights as men. The quote “The regime had understood that one person leaving her house while asking herself… Are they going to whip me?...”(84) shows how women no matter what they do will always feel unsafe and insecure about themselves because the government makes them feel like trash.
