On a warm summer evening, my brother Gordon and I were getting ready for bed when all of a sudden, an ear piercing scream shakes the oak saplings my dad planted last week. We run into the living room to see our sister curled up in a ball, crying in the doorway. She's covered in mud and is missing a shoe. I turn to my dad and ask her what happened. Dad said she was out picking flowers when she felt something looking at her. Mary Alice looked up from the beautiful Kansas wild flowers when she heard rustling in the grass behind her. She turned around to see nothing at first, then she looked down. She she saw a pair of small eyes looking up at her. She jumped backwards, losing her shoe in the process. He's been bitten by a rattlesnake three times and each time, he swelled up less and less, he's killed 6 that we've found. All of a sudden, he takes off, jumping in and out of the creek and starts chasing the rat. The three of them are running right on the edge of the creek, with the dog behind Mary Alice. At least, for a little bit. The dog tries to run through Mary Alice's legs, but trips her. Mary Alice trips and falls over the edge, into the creek. Dad rushes to Mary Alice to help her out of the creek. The dog is on top of the pack rat now, while it's still carrying the shoe. He snatches it up, keeping it alive. The shoe drops to the ground. The dog bolts through the creek towards the house with the pack rat gripped tightly in his jaws. He runs it up to mom where she throws it into a bucket. The dog then runs back to the creek at full speed. He jumps and clears the creek with little effort. He runs where the shoe was dropped and snatches it up like the pack rat. He again clears the creek with ease and slows down where dad and Mary Alice are slowly walking towards the
